Sweet Revenge

So let’s just say that all the men in your family loaded up the truck … with all the Thanksgiving leftovers… and headed seven hours south for a week of manliness at Deer Camp.  Yes, I did say “all of” the Thanksgiving leftovers.  And yes, this would include the heavenly cranberry salad, the carrot souffle, Creamy Mashed Potatoes, sweet potato casserole … if you can imagine it, it would have been included.  If that had happened to me, it would make me really proud that I had fought tooth and nail for the leftover Turkey Noodle Soup and the last piece of Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie – the only leftovers that did not escape the alleged leftover kidnapping.  If this had happened, which of course it couldn’t have, because no self-respecting husband or son would take all the Thanksgiving leftovers, it would have the potential of bringing deep anguish and melancholy to the three gals left behind.  I think … there would no choice for those misused and oppressed little lassies … but to make a batch of homemade Christmas Peppermint Bark and a batch of Haystacks.  And eat them all before the men returned.  Or at the very least, to eat a few and hide the rest until Christmas.  🙂

Decadent Turkey Noodle Soup

My father-in-law owns Manhattan’s Restaurant down in Toledo, Ohio.  They make a lot of terrific food, mostly thanks to their talented chefs.  But my father-in-law has some really great recipes of his own.  We look forward to his turkey noodle soup the day after Thanksgiving with as much enthusiasm as we do the Thanksgiving feast itself.  But it’s not for the faint-at-heart.  You low-fat lovers, I adjure you to turn and run far away.  The rest of you… read on!

Turkey Noodle Soup

Diced onion, carrot and celery, about 1 c. each

1/2 lb. butter

1  1/2 lbs. egg noodles

diced leftover turkey

chicken soup base or stock


Salt and pepper to taste

Thyme, 1 tsp. (more or less to taste as desired)

Get out your big dutch oven or stock pot and brown the diced vegetables in the 1/2 lb. butter.  You read that right.  That’s two sticks of butter.  Boil noodles and drain, adding noodles to stockpot with the sauteed vegetables.  Add 1/4 cup chicken soup base and 1-2 quarts water, or use 1-2 quarts chicken stock instead of the soup base and water.  Bouillon could be used in a pinch, but the gelatinous soup base is really good stuff!  Throw in the diced turkey, add the thyme, salt and pepper.  The salt is really important.  Start with 1 tsp. and add another 1/2 tsp. at a time until it tastes right.  Now let that baby simmer on low a couple hours until the noodles turn into a dumpling-like consistency.

This is really good served with French bread!

Thanksgiving in a Nuthouse. I Mean, Nutshell.

Have you ever laughed until you cried?  Have you ever done it twice in one day?  If so, were you pregnant at the time?  Because that doesn’t count.  No one enjoyed my Michigan joke at the Thanksgiving dinner table except me, but they all loved watching me laugh until I couldn’t breathe and tears were streaming down my face.  So I guess it was worth it!

I’m not sure how I received the honored position of hosting Thanksgiving dinner, yet only cooking the potatoes, cranberry bread, stuffing and pies.  That’s a pretty neat trick!  And we had every kind of Thanksgiving food I could think of (all of it excellent), except rolls.  No rolls.  My father in law baked white bread instead.  Right down to the sweet potato and green bean casseroles and cranberry salad, it was excellent.  And the teenagers washed up the kitchen afterward.  Ahhhh!  Sigh of contentment!

Now I don’t need to eat until Christmas Eve.  Or something like that.

Autumn Fun

Even in a rural community like ours the chances to square dance come few and far between.  One of the two local high schools choirs put on a Country Concert for the community, followed by a rip-roaring square dance!  What terrific fun it was to do the Virginia Reel with Cecily as my partner.  Betsy and Danny partnered up and JJ partnered up with one of the moms we ski with every winter.  It was terrific fun!

We also had our Annual Autumn Harvest Party, playing games, eating chili and telling hilarious stories amongst ourselves, with the friends and family who were in attendance.

We’ve done little else outside in the last few weeks.  Somehow we’ve been very busy running around.  We did manage to go on the last big trail ride of the year, in which my sassy horse decided at some point to ignore me.  He braced his head and kept running after the other horses.  The remainder of the ride we did exercises to get him to listen to me, but it was a big reminder that I haven’t worked with him since my Mom’s surgery in July.

I am setting some goals for working with him.  I’d like to participate in some event with him.  Perhaps going through the preliminary and first and second level dressage tests with him. Or maybe Extreme Cowboy Racing, which probably seems very dissimilar to dressage, but it’s not.  ECRacing is just dressage for western riders, with some reining and jumping and trail exercises thrown in.  So it’s actually more difficult than dressage but includes elements of dressage.  I’m still thinking about it.
